Gas Furnace Troubleshooting

Program Objective: The training program is designed to teach incoming students both a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of gas furnaces concepts and the practical hands-on mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills as found in the trade.

Program Outline: The course is divided into three major trouble shooting sections.

SECTION 1: Mechanical Gas burners and valves. Construction, tuning, adjustment, troubleshooting, Orifice sizing, Trouble Shooting gas valves, pressure and combustion air adjustments. Ventilation Air Requirements and Flue Vent Sizing System requirements for ventilation air and for flue gas vents. Furnace Testing Testing of furnaces for air flow, CO, and temperature rises and start ups. (15% of class)

SECTION 2: Electrical Electrical troubleshooting is taught using electrical wiring boards (wiring different 5 furnace control systems) interfaced with gas valves and burners for actual firing of systems. (10% of class)

SECTION 3: Furnace Troubleshooting Using HOP-SCOTCH Troubleshooting, the student actually troubleshoots over 200 electrically "bugged" faults on 20 different furnaces. Troubleshooting includes: Gas Furnace Testing and Trouble Shooting Sequence of operation of major types of combustion systems. Trouble shooting of controls, transformers, fan blower and combustion motors, relays, thermostats, safety controls, combination fan and high limit control gas ignition systems; Troubleshooting - standing pilot, spark ignition and hot surface ignition. (75% of class)

The students work with the instructor doing a complete furnace start up.

Class Hours: 5 + Training Days. Class Hours: M-T-W-Th -F: Days 9:00 AM -5:00 PM.

2 weeks of Evening classes, 6:30 - 9:30 PM plus 2 full Saturdays.
40 + hours total

Tools: All tools and equipment used in our shop and lab sessions are furnished by the school. with the exception of a VOM. Students will need to bring their own Fluke 116 meter.

Certification of Completion: Upon correctly diagnosing 100 "service calls" and demonstrating proficiency in troubleshooting all major furnace components and controls, a CERTIFICATION OF COMPLETION will be awarded

This course has been submitted to WA. L&I for consideration for the Electrical Traninee Class Room course and for Continuing Education for Electrical License Holders.

To successfully complete the course the students demonstrates the ability to correctly electrically troubleshoot a furnace in six minutes or less.
